Southern California Clothing Optional

Beaches

• San Onofre State Beach Located on the northernmost edge of San Diego County, between the San Onofre nuclear power plant and Camp Pendleton marine base. The traditional clothing optional area is on the southern edge.

  There is a state-park anti-nudity ordinance that has in the past been interpreted in court to apply to traditional clothing optional areas only after a complaint that day and a request to cover up.

  There is a parking fee, and the lot frequently fills on sunny weekends. Clothing-required camping spots are available for an additional fee.

  From I-5, take Basilone Road southwest to the state park. Use Trail 6 and walk south along the beach at least 100 feet south of the last life-guard tower before disrobing. Do not go beond the remains of the fence that separates the park from Camp Penelton.

  

• Black's Beach This is in La Jolla, just north of the city of San Diego. There is a trail down the cliff from the glider port on Torrey Pines Road.

Hot Springs

• Deep Creek Hot Springs Natural hot tubs found in the San Bernardino National Forest near Hesperia, this area has several hot springs that are routed into pools of various sizes and temperatures and a creek that flows by to cool off in. (Durring spring runoff, the creek is very cold.) The closest easily accessible parking is at Bowen Ranch, where there is a parking fee. The hike is about 1.5 miles, several hundred feet of elevation difference and fairly steep in places. Be sure to bring plenty of water and all other supplies you will need, and pack out all your trash. No glass containers or overnight camping is allowed at the springs. Commercial Resorts

• Mystic Oaks (formerly Camp McConville) The only Naturist resort in Orange County, this wooded retreat has rental cabins.

• Elysium Fields Clothing optional resort located northwest of Los Angeles. While not huge, this club does offer nice facilities including a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, tennis courts, and several meeting rooms.

• Swallows Sun Island Twenty miles east of San Diego. This is a nice place with somewhat fewer and smaller facilities than some of the competition, but is much cheaper to go to as either a member that some of the competition.

• The Camping Bares A southern California travel club, with events most weekends. Naked Vollyball A travel club that plays volleyball at varions Southern California clubs and beaches. Olympian Club Another non-landed club, this one is affiliated with the AANR and WSA.

Books

• Lee Baxandall's World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts
  The 1998 edition is now available. By far the most complete guide to clothing-optional recreation. Lists all of the above sites.
• Califonia's Nude Beaches
  ISBN 0-9614880-3-4 $15.95 This book lists several sites that are no longer accepted as clothing optional, so use with caution. Rancho Palos Verdes passed an anti-nudity ordinance after this edition was published, elminating Smugglers Cove and Inspiration Point, while others have not been accepted for years. This book does devote more space to each listing, so is a useful supplement to the above book.
• Hot Springs and Hot Pools of the Southwest
  ISBN 1-890880-01-9 $18.95 This book, and its companion northwest version, are the best source of information on natural hot pools available to the public. Also listed are many commercial resorts featuring "hot" pools.
