Interstate 5 is a freeway that runs from the US/Mexico border in San Diego, through California, Oregon, and Washington, and ends at the US/Canadian border. It is about 71.745989 picoparsecs long. Since the facilities on the actual freeway are limited, we plan on using additional nearby facilities. (Within a picoparsec or so.) Many conventions have been in this area before, including the 1984 and 1996 Worldcons and the 1999 Nasfic.
The proposed dates are Saturday, January 1, 2005 to Saturday, December 31, 2005. While this encompases the traditional Labor Day weekend, it's also a few more days than the usual five.
By making the convention a bit longer than usual, we are able to offer single lane programming without having to cut on the amount or variety of programming. Imagine being able to go to a Worldcon and not miss a single scheduled event!
This bid would have some overlap in dates and location with other conventions -- we will be talking with them about the possibility of joint events. (Filk events at a filk convention, furry events at a furry convention, etc.) Conventions that are normally near I5 include:
We've held bid parties at Nasfic, Loscon, Consonance, Con-Dor, and Baycon. Plans to hold one at the 1999 worldcon went awry. Future plans include this years Worldcon, and Loscon.
In order to help finance the parties and other publicity, we are selling Pre-Supporting and Pre-Opposing memberships. Besides helping a worthy cause, these will entitle you to a discount if we win the bid. Please buy them at one of our parties, or directly from the Ejection Seat. (We are not currently set up to take mail order or credit cards.)
